Project M is a program for creative people who are already inspired to contribute to the greater good, and are looking for a platform to collaborate and generate ideas and projects bigger than themselves.
"In the creative process, designers are victims of their own synaptic connections; subconsciously we’re following predictable pathways to solve problems [whereas] what you would want at the beginning of a design challenge is as many possibilities as you could imagine. 'Thinking wrong' is really about breaking those biases and synaptic pathways to generate a lot of potential solutions before you select and execute one."
- John Bielenberg on Design Indaba.
In Spring 2004, a team of designers traveled to Guanacaste, Costa Rica, to assist Dr. Daniel Janzen in creating an endowment for the Área de Conservación de Guanacaste (ACG), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Janzen and his wife, Dr. Winnie Hallwachs, have made groundbreaking contributions to biodiversity research, cataloging over 500,000 specimens through DNA barcoding and identifying cryptic species. Together, they championed the establishment of the ACG, unifying over 163,000 hectares of tropical ecosystems to protect and restore biodiversity.
Their conservation strategy includes restoring tropical dry forests by regenerating degraded land, integrating local communities as conservation advocates, and fundraising to expand protected areas. The designers’ efforts included navigating jungles, hiking volcanoes, and enduring heavy rainfall to support the ACG's critical conservation mission.
